What it is?

Dry needling dates back to the 1940’s with Dr. Janet Travell.  Throughout her study she was able to identify “trigger points,” and the referral patterns related to those trigger points.  Trigger points are a cut off of oxygen supply to certain areas of a muscle, and the decreased oxygen makes the muscle acidic, causing a release of other chemicals which cause pain in the surrounding area.  Trigger points can either be latent or active, with active being larger and more painful.  The goal of a dry needling therapist is to locate the trigger point causing pain or dysfunction, and release it with a needle.  Doing this will help to bring oxygen back to the muscle, allow the muscle to return to normal length and remove some of the pain causing chemicals.  The release of the Trigger Point may be accompanied with a localized twitch in the muscle.  The local twitch response is a sign the muscle is being released.

Understanding Dry Needling

Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular and connective tissues for the management of muscular pain and movement impairments.  Dry needling is a technique used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia and connective tissue, and diminish persistent painful input, and reduce or restore impairments of body structure and function leading to improved range of motion and decreased pain.

Who Should Receive Dry Needling Treatment?

Many patients can benefit from dry needling, and it has been proven to be an effective combination treatment, along with chiropractic care.  Patients who have experienced the following conditions have benefited from dry needling therapy:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Generalized muscle pain and soreness
  • Decreased range of motion of a joint
  • Painful scars
  • Scars limiting range of motion
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tightness
  • Chronic pain

What To Expect During A Dry Needling Treatment in Chillicothe?

The first thing to note is the needles being used are very different than needles patients may have experienced in the past.  The needles are very thin and smooth, for maximal comfort and effectiveness.  The initial introduction of the needle to the skin feels like being lightly poked with a toothpick.  The following active treatment is done, with the patient experiencing some muscle twitches throughout the treatment.  The twitches are a sign the Trigger Points are being released.

On your first visit to our clinic in Chillicothe, we will begin by performing a thorough history and examination.  After the results are analyzed, we will identify the problematic areas and develop a individualized treatment plan.  Once it is determined what area is to be treated, the Dr. will accompany you to a treatment room and the treatment will begin.  Depending on the individual case, massage, moist heat, or cold packs may be combined with the therapy.  The total visit typically lasts around 15-20 minutes depending on the number of muscles being treated.

As with many conditions, the treatment effects can vary, depending on the severity of the problem and individualized reaction to treatment.  Many patients describe feeling immediate relief and improved range of motion.  Some patients experience some soreness following treatment which is called, “Post Needling Soreness.”  It is common and the patients will typically feel relief and improved function after a period of 24-48 hours.

While side effects are minimal, some patients have reported minor bouts of nausea, bruising and soreness following the initial treatment.  If this occurs do not be alarmed and notify your treating health care professional prior to the next visit.
